Gary Kemp and Songbook

Gary will be featured in a new series about songwriters on Sky Arts called Songbook. An episode devoted to him will be first aired on 8th May at 8pm Sky Arts Channel 267 and Sky Arts HD Channel 268 Gary will be interviewed about his song writing and amongst other things talks about how the Bishop of Stepney inspired his musical career and how True was written by him whilst sitting on his parents bed at home. He also gives his first acoustic solo performance of the song since he performed it to the rest of Spandau Ballet for the first time in 1982 and he will also perform acoustically Through the Barricades and Inexperienced Man Songbook is presented by music journalist and author of Guitar Man and Song Man, Will Hodgkinson. He comments. Working on Songbook has brought it home to me how mercurial and elusive the art of songwriting is. None of the artists we spoke to could explain why songs they have written have become hits all over the world — only that they knew when they had got it right. But they spoke with unguarded passion and insight about the universal appeal of a great song, and the blood, sweat and tears that go into the creation of one. The pop song is rarely seen as high art. But writing a great pop song is extremely hard. There's no formula for it. That's what makes the process so fascinating, and that process is what Songbook is all about." The series will also feature – Phil Collins, Fran Healy, Mick Hucknall, Squeeze, David Gray, Hugh Cornwell, Ian McCulloch You will also find more information and see a clip of the programme on the sky arts website http://www.skyarts.co.uk/SkyArts/SearchResults.aspx?search=songbook
